Hippocampal Theory published in WIREs Cognitive Science
Sept. 2016

In order to make our documentary as scientifically valid as possible, we researched and wrote our brain model as an academic paper. World-class hippocampus expert Dr. Lynn Nadel, who we interviewed in 2014, invited us to submit the paper to the journal he was editor-in-chief at. Our paper, "Neurotypical Subjective Experience is caused by a hippocampal simulation," was published in WIREs Cognitive Science in Sept. 2016.
Dr. Ralf-Peter Behrendt pens commentary on Hippocampal Theory
April 2017

Yes, we were scooped! The filmmaking team arrived at the hippocampal theory on their own, but we were not the first to get there. Dr. Ralf-Peter Behrendt, in the UK, first published a similar theory in 2010. He followed that up with two subsequent papers in 2013, which extend that model. We cite all 3 papers in our article.

We have been in correspondence with Dr. Behrendt since late 2013, and we agree with him on many aspects of our respective models. In his commentary on our 2016 theory paper, also published in WIREs Cognitive Science, he focused on the differences between our respective theories. We have followed up with a response to his commentary, and are available on the WIREs site, or on our ResearchGate or Academia.edu sites. Below is a link to Behrendt's excellent open-access 2013 paper.
